Mama sang a song    (video)

       C              F                 E             Am

God put a song in the heart of an angel,

            Dm            G            C

and softly she sang it to me.

   C                                                   C7

1.    I get to thinking lots of times about back when I was a lad,

F

of the old home place where I grew up,

               C

of the days both good and bad,

C                               Am                               D                       G

my overalls were hand-me-downs, my shoes were full of holes.

I used to walk four miles to school every day,

C

through the rain the sleet and the cold.

                                                     F

I've seen the nights when my daddy would cry

                                                              C

for the things that his family would need.

                                                           G

But all he ever got was a badland farm

                                                    C

and seven hungry mouths to feed.

                                                                               C

And yet, and yet our home fire never flickered once,

                          G                                  C

’cause when all these things went wrong,

Mama took the hymn book down and mama sang this song :

         C       C7                       F

+  What a friend we have in Jesus !

   C

2.    I've been rocked to sleep many a night

to the tune of What a Friend,

                        G

and come morning, Rock of Ages

would wake me gently once again.

                                                   C

And then daddy would reach up,

and he'd take the Bible down,

                    C7

and he'd read it, read it loud and long.

F

And I always felt that maybe our house was blessed,

                                              C

when daddy would say, “Mama sing a song !”

                                         G        - C

3. Sister left home first I guess,

and then Bob and then Tommy and then Dan.

                     F

By then dad's hair was turning white

                                                            -  Bb

and I had to be mama's little man,

but it seemed that as daddy's back grew weak,

                          F

my mother's faith just grew strong.

               C                                              F

And those were the greatest days of all,

    when mama sang a song.

       F                   Bb       F    Bb         F          C          F

+  Rock of ages cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee.

     C   F    C7

    Do do doo.

   C7

4.     I guess the house is still standing,

I don't get to go back much anymore.

F

No voice is left to fill those halls,

                                C7

and no steps to grace the floor.

                                                            F

For, you see, my mother sings in heaven now,

    around God's golden throne.

                F

But I'll always believe that this world is a better place,

                    Bb         - F    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

because one time        my mama sang a song.

        F   Dm    C   Dm    F    C     Bb - F - Gm - F

+  Precious mem'ries flood my sou.....................l.
